We came back from Devon last weekend and spent time working on the grounds, the orangery and the greenhouses. Everything is growing -shrubs are bursting into flower, the roses and the grapevines are in leaf and climbing and there were two beautiful black & white wagtails cavorting in the courtyard in the sunshine yesterday. What a terrific place, it never fails to amaze me.

Once here, visitors find the tram travels up and down the length of the island every 20 minutes and connect with transport to both Bradenton and Sarasota. You can get most things on Anna Maria Island, from provisions, to gifts, sporting goods and even pets. But if you really have to get away and put your credit card to the test there are plenty of malls and major stores located within a short drive.

All you could need, with fresh fruit, vegetables, a super bakery which bakes fresh bread, cakes and doughnuts daily. Large selection of wines, excellent meat selection, a good delicatessen and everything else you could need to cook a special meal, or stock up on provisions for a picnic.

There is a good selection of shops in all three of the cities on Anna Maria Island. The Holmes Beach shopping center, located just past the traffic lights on Gulf Drive, has small cafes, gift shops, rental shops and art galleries.

Heard from some great people who live in Nova Scotia. They said they can't wait to get back to Anna Maria again this year as the weather up there is so cold. Taking a boat trip from the Cortez fishing village just beside the bridge leading onto Anna Maria Island up through the intercoastal waterway and across to an uninhabited islan just north of here. The island lies to the south of Clearwater and north from Anna Maria island and used to be used as a fort. The remains of the fort are still visible and it is the perfect spot for exploring and picnics on the beach. Sometimes we take along a small grill and cook out - cold beer or spritzers and freshly grilled burgers - sitting in the sand in the sunshine. My idea of heaven!

Yesterday we rode the free trolley service down to the southern tip of Anna Maria Island and then picked up a connecting trolley down through the next island south, ending up in the world famous St Armands Circle. An exotic circular fusion of luxury boutiques, restaurants and galleries that rivals Rodeo Drive on a smaller more elegant level. It was not a shopping trip, we intended to have lunch at one of the elegant Columbia Restaurantand a glass or two of Californian wine. Dessert is just a short walk around to the ice cream parlour and there is plenty of hand made fudge, chocolates and candy for the dedicated chocoholic. Definitely not a diet day.

Anna Maria Island is divine over Christmas and the New Year. The quaint little streets are lined with houses displaying festive lights and strolling around in the quiet of the evenings admiring them is definitely addictive. Traverse the length of the island by car and you can see that the islanders really love the holidays. Islanders celebrate Thanksgiving in style. Over the years we have been invited to cookouts, formal holiday dinners and picnics but the award for the ultimate Thanksgiving dinner has to go to our neighbor Joanne. Her kitchen is an absolute hive of activity, the table groans with the most spectacular food and the scrumptious turkey dinner is followed by her home cooked secret recipe cheesecake - positively the best dessert in the history of the universe. Invited guests troop in from all directions to Canasta Drive and the drinks flow freely as does the conversation. At Joanne's house the talk is always lively and intelligent, laced with a good dollop of wry humor ranging from island politics to world affairs. Don is the master of comedy and has a ready supply of jokes if the conversation flags in the soporific aftermath of the consumption of copious amount of Joanne's super food. After dinner, some guests drift off for a snooze on the shady deck overlooking the water, others sit and sip a creamy cappucino in the comfortable lounge. An invitation to their celebration of America's favorite holiday is a real honor.

A pelican arrived by the swimming pool this morning with some fishing line and a hook in his beak. Normally we would phone the pelican man, but in this instance it was very weak so we removed the hook and gave him some fish for lunch. He stayed around for a few hours and then having recovered his strength, flew off.

The birds here on the Island are many and various and occasionally we get a real treat like the red woodpecker who arrived to make a hole in the palm tree right outside my laundry - we watched him through the window just a few feet away up on the upper floor. He worked really hard but I don't know if it did the tree much good.

I am just off to stroll down the island to Coquina Beach, a long stretch of sand on the southern tip of Anna Maria Island. I am also going to stop off to see what is going on at Leffis Key, a small nature reserve with boardwalks through the wetlands nestled on the edge of the Bay.

Tennis is on the cards today, so we are going up to the free courts on Anna Maria Island. They are well kept and the fact that you do not have to pay to use them is a great advantage (pun). Keeping fit with the odd game of tennis, plenty of swimming and walking the beach is great fun. I prefer to do this than to go to the gym, but if exercise and weights are your thing we have a couple of great gyms in the area.

The island is peaceful and quiet this morning. I walked the beach early this morning and just had seabirds for my companions. It's well worth getting up early and going over to the beach to stroll along the sands at the edge of the water. The other day I found a small fossil that now has pride of place in my house. A few years ago a French professor came to stay and showed us how to spot fossils. He used to bring them over to my office on the beachfront and explain in details what and how old they were. Fascinating, I was quite sad when he left.

Looking up some details on Florida last night I came across a great web site Luddist.com has facts, figures and history of Florida that make interesting reading if you want to know how Florida came to be as it is today.

On the food front, I am today making a Key Lime Pie from scratch, using Mary Holmes' recipe. You can buy a very good version from Publix just down the road, but using 3 eggs and 5 fresh limes, plus a short crust or crushed cookie base is just unbeatable.The only problems is that it flies off the plate so fast!

Woke early and went for a swim in the pool before a breakfast of croissants from the bakery. Today is going to be really busy as i have to catch up on some bookkeeping before heading down to Sarasota's historic district to meet a friend for lunch. This is in the center of Sarasota and comprises small shops and restaurants that are great for browsing and lunching.

I will drive down through the island as I love the views and on the way home may stop off at St Armands Circle to pick up some home made candy from Kilwins.

We booked local captain Don Meilner to take us out into the bay for a picnic cruise. Taking along the charcoal barbecue grill we set up in the water on the sandbank opposite the little island Sister Key that appears at low tide and cooked up some great burgers. The large food cooler also contained home made potato salad, a crisp green salad, burger buns, mayo and tomato ketchup. I had run up to Publix grocery store for one of their fantastic luscious key lime pies and some of their amazing glazed long twist doughnuts. Washed down with some cans of Bud, this was undoubtedly a feast fit for a king (not good for the waistline but nevertheless perfect seafaring food for hungry sailers) We sailed back to Anna Maria Island fat and happy at sunset.

Today we are driving up to Tampa airport to pick up some friends who are flying in from the UK. I never fail to enjoy the drive across the magnificent Skyway Bridge that spans the entrance Tampa Bay. It is one of the most beautiful in Florida. Miles and miles of silvery blue seas stretch in both directions and the bridge is so high the name is perfectly apt.

The old bridge that was damaged when a ship ran into it years ago has been made into the longest fishing pier in the world, so at least it was not wasted.

Driving across the bridge, if you look out into the Gulf you can see the northern tip of Anna Maria Island which confirms what we all feel - it is, as we never tire of saying, a jewel in the Gulf.

There is a great new website that I have been looking at for my planned tour of Europe. Wales in the UK seems like a great place to visit and apparently spending a couple of days at The Bwlch Tre Banau Estate in Carmarthenshire is a must. We will travel there by train and ask for a taxi to pick us up from the station and take us up to the Estate.

Everything here on the island is quiet at the moment, peaceful times in the Autumn allow for long lazy days and languid evenings relaxing over a game of cards or a favorite movie. This evening we are having sweet and delicious snow crab claws, a crispy salad with my favorite blue cheese dressing and a home made key lime pie made to Mary Holmes recipe that was handed down to her from the old days. The juice of 5 fresh limes goes in and a crunchy biscuit crust topped with crispy meringue makes a desert in a million. I always find that there is none left and some people have actually gone so far as to lick the plate, although I won't mention any names!

Picked some great bargains off the sale rails down at the De Sota Mall in Bradenton and then took in a movie. Just 15 minutes drive along Cortez Road, cross the Highway 41 intersection and you can be in shopping heaven. Enjoyed a cappuccino in Starbucks and picked out some suggestions for my Christmas list in the jewelery store - there's no harm in hoping!

This morning received an email from the United Kingdom to say that the new web site for The Bwlch Tre Banau Estate in Wales has now been launched The company who runs it. Listed Heritage, are looking forward to welcoming many visitors from the United States during 2009.

After we had checked out the website we went down to the pool for a leisurely morning swim and then hatched a plan to drive over the Manatee drawbridge into mainland Bradenton. We stopped off at The Bishop Planetarium. It has different shows throughout the year with something to suit all tastes and age groups. While in Bradenton, the nearby Parker Manatee Aquarium is the home of Snooty, the world's most recognized of those gentle creatures, the Manatee (Sea Cow).

Rose early the other morning and walked the beach at sunrise. I planned to pay another visit to the Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum. In order to keep up my new fitness regime I took the bicycle out of the garage and cycled up the island to Pine Avenue in Anna Maria City. It is one of the smallest museums in Florida but, to me, one of the most interesting. Archived photos of times gone past from the early parts of the last century onwards, on through the fifties and sixties are my favorite. I love sifting through them. The volunteers are friendly and chat knowledgeably about the island's past. On the way home I stopped off at Matt & Dom's pastry cafe, just cannot resist some cappuccino or maybe if I am feeling saint like a smoothie. The pastries are delicious and as I cycled several miles I enjoyed these treats without guilt.

Exploring the waterways by kyak on one of the eco-tours sounds like a fun activity for this time of year. It's a chance to see parts of the Florida landscape and seascape around Anna Maria Island that we cannot easily access from the land, getting closer to nature and exploring pristine habitats. We are off to experience this first hand.

Diving is another activity that is offered from both Coquina Beach and Cortez beach. Sea Trek Divers operate a full service Padi five star dive center. They say that if you are not a certified diver you can get certified in as little as 4 days and that student divers can complete their training with them. Sea Trek also have a full range of rental scuba equipment and snorkeling gear.

That should keep us busy for a few days!

Sarasota is known as the cultural center of Florida. Despite this rather highbrow title it is in fact a great city to visit for all the family. Culture vultures have the Van Weazel theatre with ballet, symphony orchestras and plays. Gourmets have a plethora of some of America's best restaurants. Fans of gardens and horticulture have the famous Marie Selby Gardens. Ca D'Zan is the historic waterfront home of the famous Ringling Circus family, now open to the public and the adjacent Ringling Museum of Art houses some of Rubens extremely huge "cartoons" among other priceless works of art.

If you love animals try Sarasota Jungle Gardens with its parrots, snakes and exotic species. Fans of cars will find the classic car center enthralling. Love the movies? there are plenty of theaters with diverse films to please everyone.

From Anna Maria Island you can drive down to Sarasota through the islands of Longboat Key and Lido Key, then take another bridge over to the mainland right into the heart of the city. Alternatively you can take the Manatee bridge over to Bradenton and follow the highway down to Sarasota.

Robbie the former owner of villa Tuscany is on his way to back to stay at this lovely Anna Maria Island property. He is stopping
off to visit friends in Orlando and then driving down to the island to spend
a few well earned weeks of relaxing, dining in the local restaurants and
fishing. Fishing is one of his favorite occupations so the island is
idyllic for him. While he is at the beach or over at the pier Annie will be

Just another day in paradise. October through December are the best months in Florida. The roads are peaceful, the weather is steady and balmy, cooler than the heat of the summer months but the Gulf is still warm enough for me to enjoy my morning swim. I rise at 7 am and after a cup of coffee we walk to the beach to swim for half an hour. Starting the day off with a swim makes you feel that life is really worth living. At that time it is so quiet with only some seabirds for company and when the Gulf is as smooth of glass with just an occasional ripply wave you feel that life does not get any better than it is at that moment.

We cycled up to Bean Point on the north end of Anna Maria Island. The views out over the Gulf never fail to amaze me, changing with the seasons. It is always warm but the seas are ever changing. Subtle nuances of color from turquoise to azure and silver. At sunset the waters turn red and gold reflecting the colors spreading out over the sky.

Stopped off for a snack and a welcome cup of coffee and then explored many of the pretty streets of Anna Maria.

When we arrived back at Villa Rosa we found a postcard from a place in The United Kingdom called The Brecon Beacons. This is a beautiful mountain range where the scenery is similar to the prettier parts of North Georgia. The people are friendly and the towns are historic. Today I am going to drive down through the islands to little Lido Key to have lunch at St Armands Circle. Charlie's Crab is one of my favorite meeting places for lunch. The food is beautifully and imaginatively served and tastes delicious. After lunch we will walk round to Kilwins for some of their home made icecream and some handmade delights to take home. Favorite flavor? vanilla of course, smothered with walnuts and butterscotch sauce.

The shops and galleries on the Circle make time fly by. It is quite easy to while away a morning browsing through clothes, jewellery, watches, home accessories and art. Window shopping here is my idea of heaven, especially as there are plenty of excellent restaurants, coffee shops and ice cream sellers to provide sustenance. All this just 20 minutes drive from Anna Maria Island. Cross the bridge and travel down through Longboat Key. It's a great day out.

Heading off to the Bradenton Beach City Pier for a spot of fishing. The pier used to be the original old wooden bridge that connected the island to the mainland ending up in Cortez fishing village. Nowadays, at the end of the pier you can see the boats sail by on their way up the intercoastal waterway.

Might stop off for breakfast on the way at the locally famous Gulf Drive Cafe. Love their French Toast liberally dosed with with loads of butter and maple syrup, washed down with copious cups of coffee.

I also plan to walk down to Leffis Key, the nature reserve, later on today. It has boardwalks and takes you through the mangroves to the view overlooking Sister Key. Years ago we nearly bought that Island, but life is full of almosts and nearlys and I could have dones.

I'm going sailing. Maggie and John have a 25 ft ketch and have invited us along to sail out into the blue seas of the Gulf with them. I have prepared a picnic of lemon pepper chicken, some home-made potato salad and some of that delicious white mountain bread I'm so fond of. I also put some of Joanne's famous secret recipe cheesecake in the cooler and some home-made lemonade. I don't know if we will stop off anywhere this time or just keep sailing. One day I would love to sail down to Key West.

Last time we went out on the Gulf we sailed up to little Egmont Key, an uninhabited island that has a ruined fort on it. We took the barbecue and cooked-out on the beach -real multi level American burgers in sesame seed buns, with the best ground beef, cheese, salad, ketchup and mayo - all washed down with some cans of ice cool Bud from the cooler. Then we sliced up a huge juicy red watermelon and lay around in the sunshine chattering. Life doesn't get any better than this.

It's only 10 minutes from the island so he finished in plenty of time to take Louise out for dinner at the Beach Bistro. It was their anniversary and he wanted the best restaurant on the island - I told him it was one of the best restaurants in the whole of Florida and the setting is really romantic. White table cloths, candles and moonlight and beautiful presented delicious tasting food, it never fails to impress.

We were in one of the island's restaurants and someone asked "How fresh is the catch of the day?" Well, our waters are teeming with grouper, red snapper, mullet and blue crab and the Cortez fishin village is nearby so that answered that question quickly!

Anna Maria Island is one of the most beautiful of the Florida west coast keys. A key is a barrier island and there are two groups in Florida, the other one being the string that runs down from Miami to Key West. We went down to Key West a few years ago and took the small boat. We went snorkelling, exploring the waterways down through the islands, and had so much fun. However, it is not such a great vacation destination as Anna Maria Island. Anna Maria wins hands down for quality of accommodation, things to do such as golf courses, tennis, shopping, theaters, museums and exhibitions, theme parks and state parks. it is also my opinion that the beaches are superior. However Key West is worth a brief visit just to take in the Hemingway ambiance.

The intercoastal waterways span out in all directions, dotted with sailboats, dolphins and pelicans. Drove over to the mainland town of Bradenton, just 15 minutes away stopped at The Outback for a great steak. One large perfectly grilled fillet later (medium rare is my preference garnished with a large fluffy baked potato with butter and sour cream)we went on to take in a movie.

I am going across the Cortez bridge drawbridge today to mainland Bradenton. As I drive over the bridge I always glance over to the Bradenton Beach Marina to check out the boats they have moored on their jetty. On the mainland side of the bridge the watersports centers and boat trips are based. On the edge of the intracoastal waterway, parasailing and jetskis vie with dolphin tours, kayaking and fishing trips out into the Gulf for business. A few hundred yards further on turn right into Cortez village. This has been a fishing village since the 1920s and has that old Florida way of life and architecture that proved so evocative as a film location for George Clooney's movie "A Perfect Storm".

On my way back to Anna Maria Island I am going to stop off at Cortez Village to buy some freshly caught fish for lunch. I have some great recipes from "What's Cooking in Cortez". You can buy it at the shop in the village.

The Cortez Village Folk Art Festival will be celebrating on Saturday, November 15, 2008 and we will be enjoying the music, food and new exhibits, arts and crafts. It will be a great chance to do some Christmas shopping. All you need to bring is your appetite, a few dollars, some sunscreen and a lawn chair!

Cortez has a long history of folks making great music. The entertainers will include: Something Special, Myakka, Maple Mountain Music, Motley Crewe Sea Chanties, Richard Culbreath & Heather Doig and the Richard Culbreath Group. Cortez fisherman "Goose" Culbreath won the State of Florida Folk Heritage Award in 1992 for his music and although he's no longer with us, there will be other great Cortez musicians performing. I cycled down to Longboat Key to visit friends. Passing through sandy Coquina Beach on the southern tip of Anna Maria Island I stopped and walked out onto Leffis Key. This a nature reserve area with a series of board walks and trails that meander through mangroves and out to the water overlooking a tiny island named Sister Key.

Florida Hikes says "A unspoiled sliver between the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay, Leffis Key sits between Bradenton Beach and Longboat Key. Although the entire trail system is less than a mile, it’s fun to explore. After you walk across the broad entrance boardwalk, you have your choice of directions to take. Head left to check out the boardwalks through mangrove tunnels, with overlooks on the bay. Turn right to walk out to a crystal-clear cove where interpretive signs point out the sea squirts and sponges. In the center of the island, a tall spoil pile provides a sweeping view of the sea, the bay, and the northern rim of Longboat Key."

This is a pretty apt description, however I would add that the view from the bay is one of the most stunning in the whole of Florida.

Driving across the drawbridge to Anna Maria Island this morning I thought to myself that this must be one of the most beautiful places on earth. The pale early morning sunshine glistening on the water, boats meandering through the intercoastal waterways between the island the island and the mainland and pelicans diving for fish.

Went down to talk to Captain Don Meilner about planning a boat trip. Not only is he one of the most competent, qualified captains around, he is also the most fun and has a great line in chatter and jokes to keep everyone amused. One of the nicest guys I have run across in my time on Anna Naria Island. Everyone should book a sunset cruise with him as it is good for the soul - glowing sunset colors on the water, stopping off at a restaurant for dinner and then wending your way home by moonlight. Truly one of the best experiences that you will remember always.

Arrived at Holmes Beach and called in to see the guests staying at Villa Tuscany. They love the house and wanted some information on the island so I gave them the location of the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce. They have all the leaflets, maps and general information on the area and its attractions.

As Villa Tuscany has Hi-Speed Internet access via DSL I pointed them in the direction of annamaria.com his web page has loads of useful info so they can make the best of their stay.

Went up to the north end of the island this morning on the free trolley service. It;s a fun way to travel. Explored Pine Avenue and called in at the island's small museum near the old, now unused, tiny island jail. What a pretty avenue, The tiny old Roser church, the George Bean House and the beautiful Bay View Plaze.Stopped off Mama Lo's Coffee Shop, checked out Nantucket Bay, The Museum Shoppe and The White Egret, Two Sides of Nature and really enjoyed Chapae. Having "shopped 'til I dropped" I then went out on the Anna Maria City Pier to relax and enjoy the views over Tampa Bay. One of the shops looked after my purchases until I got back. Anna Maria Island is such a friendly helpful place to be.

As the rest of American starts to cool down, it stays warm in Florida. At the moment it is 90 degrees. I love the fact that the dress of the day is either a cute T-shirt & shorts or a sundress. We have some great stores that have a terrific choice of island wear here on Anna Maria Island. I went shopping yesterday and bought a couple of really cute cotton dresses that will be ideal for visiting some of the islands restaurants. I think I will get him to take me to the Beach Bistro for a celebratory dinner!

I walked down 6th Avenue this morning, past the the pretty properties that have the look of the Mediterranean about them, then turned left on 42nd and left again into 5th Avenue. I wanted to come up to take a look at a really pretty house called Villa Cassandra. It has a waterfall in the pool and the gardens are full of blooming tropical plants. What a gorgeous place. I am looking for a house to suit some friends who are coming over to Anna Maria Island in a couple of weeks time and they asked me to find them the best that the island has to offer.

On my way back I stopped off at Publix bakery and picked up some of their luscious glazed doughnuts and hurried back to brew a fresh pot of coffee to go with them. We had a picnic out on the balcony overlooking the bay. we spotted a Manatee way out in the water, I could not find the binoculars but we watched until it slowly made its way into the distance.

What a perfect morning.

We went to the Beach Bistro this evening with ome friends are staying with Anna Maria Vacations in their beautiful property The Villa Tuscany. They reserved it online at www.annamaria.com and are staying for a couple of weeks.

They tell me it has a great pool and is a Mediterranean style property - they have had some cookouts down by the pool, grilling steaks from The Chop Shop and shrimp from Cortez Village. I think they want to sell their home up north and buy a house down here on Anna Maria Island. It's always the same, once people visit here they can't wait to get back.

The Beach Bistro is a national award winning restaurant that is becoming famous worldwide - the food is spectacular and the position on the edge of the Gulf sands is unbeatable.

Anna Maria Island is a great place to visit in the fall. The streets are quiet, the sea is still warm and the prices are at their lowest. With the kids back at school, the island returns to it's sleepy, quiet self - long lazy days and time to talk, relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Went down to Publix this morning and succumbed to the doughnut counter - bought a mixed box, brought them back home, brewed a fresh pot of coffee, took them out on the balcony on the sunshine and feasted. Glazed, maple iced and other delights. Mmmmm! the best doughnuts in the Universe.

Don will take you on a sunset dinner cruise, out along the Gulf side of the island or exploring the inland waterways. Capt. Mark Johnston of Annie’s said he’s also catching trout, redfish and snook.

Bill Lowman at Island Discount Tackle at Catchers Marina in Holmes Beach said offshore fishers are catching grouper. Backwater anglers are catching redfish, snapper and trout.

Bob Kilb at the Rod & Reel Pier said anglers there are catching small mackerel, mangrove snapper, redfish and black drum.

Dave Sork at the Anna Maria City Pier said fishers there were pretty much echoing what was coming from the Rod & Reel: macks, snapper, reds and drum.

We are going fishing today. I booked for both of us to go from the Cortez fishing village with the local fishermen. Hoping to come back with some Red Snapper for supper. Packed a picnic - we always get really hungry when we are out on the water.

I have some friends staying at Villa Serena this week. There are eight of them and they wanted a really great house, with a pool, plenty of bathrooms and comfortable beds so this is perfect for them. This morning I swam in the crystal blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico before breakfast and saw a family of dolphins arching gracefully in and out of the water a few hundred yards out. I think they were searching the shallows for small fish.

Years ago before they renourished the beaches the waters used to lap right up to the seawall at the front of the house we lived in. I was standing up on the top balcony and a dolphin came in so far I was afraid he would get stranded - he was chasing a fish that hid in the shallows just a few feet from the seawall. The whole thing happened so fast, it was quite a sight! It was one of those days when the sea was so calm and crystal clear you could easily see to the bottom. The small fish just stayed out of reach of the dolphin who swam off to find a lunch that was easier to catch.

Went by to check out the gorgeous Villa Rosa vacation rental property. It really is an amazingly beautiful Mediterranean house nestled right on the edge of Anna Maria Sound. You can sit on the end of the dock and watch dolphins swimming through the waterway - the Sound is a dolphin nursery, they bring up their young here are when the boats go by they follow in the wake, leaping sometimes many feet out of the water through the waves. One year a family of about 12 manatees came up under the dock and stayed, swimming back and forth for about an hour. We lay on our stomachs on the dock and watched as these magnificent mammals cruised gently around underneath us, with the surface of the water just 2 feet away.

Villa Rosa is looking magnificent, as usual. The bougainvillae has entertwined around the pergola making a shady spot to sit beside the pool and the palms and landscaping in the courtyard at the front of the house are now really lush and mature.

Woke early this morning, took a quick shower and then set off for a long leisurely stroll along the beach. I found a small, but beautiful fossil washed up among the seashore - it looks like some sort of crustacean imprinted on a pebble. I must show it to my friend who is has studies fossils and ask him what it is. There are planty of sea shells and sand dollars washed up in a line along the edge of the water this morning. The weather this morning is a sunny 82 degrees and is scheduled to go into the mid 90's later on towards mid-day.

Anna Maria Island Diary
Another lazy day in paradise. We are not working today and are just going to cook out by the pool. I drove down to Cortez fishing village this morning and picked up some locally caught red snapper to cook on the charcoal grill. First I will let it sit for a while in some home made lime marinade (a recipe passed on to me by one of the local fishermen's wives). Served with a crispy green salad with sides of large tomatoes sliced & drizzled with best quality italian olive oil and snipped fresh basil. Add some heavenly White Mountain bread from the bakery at the island's Publix grocery store and you will understand why I wrote the first sentence of this blog!

Dessert will be fresh pineapple at the perfection of sweet ripeness, sliced and layered with kiwi and green grapes. A little sprinkling of natural demerara, cover and chill in the fridge for an hour.

As cooking on the charcoal grill is men's work I just need to go to the fridge and take out the salad and the fruit and carry it down. Plenty of time to catch up on "Five Quarters of the Orange" by Joanne Harris.
